Trail mix for Camp out

I have never had the pleasure (if that’s what you would like to call it – I think it would probably be chaos) of attending camp out with the Cub Scouts. I have been told by my son and husband how AMAZING it is and how much fun they always have when they come back. I also always hear how much all the other kids and dad’s love the trail mix I pack so I couldn’t disappoint and had to whip some up for this weekend.

My buddy actually help me make it this time! I stopped at Trader Joe’s to get the supplies for the mixes on my way into work this morning. They always seem to have great prices on nuts and dried fruits, and they have fun additions like the candy coated sunflower seeds that you don’t see most places and are special additions for the kids. When I got home from work and asked him if he wanted to help me, he slowly looked at my over those huge adorable glasses and his Nintendo 3DS and started to tell me no. So I played the mom guilt card and reminded him this was the only time that he would have with me all weekend, I always feel guilty tricking him into helping me, but once we get started we have a blast. He just needs the push. 74605ebb-8601-4e67-9565-27c09878fbf9

We talked about the ingredients in the trail mix, he advised me that he would not be eating the “Elvis” mix because he hates peanuts. I reminded him that this is what peanut butter is made from, so he chewed one for what seemed like an eternity in my ear trying to make PB in his mouth. (Anyone else have kids that eat like they were raised in a barn?) We talked about the books he got out from the library and music class today and he told me how much fun he was going to have this weekend with his “best buds”. Needless to say it was the best 15 minutes of my day and I nursed it for an additional 5!

A delicious and savory trail mix your little and big kids will love

-16 oz small pretzels (I used multi-grain nugget style from Trader Joes)

-16 oz roasted and lightly salted peanuts

-8 oz banana chips

-8 oz beef jerky (chopped into smaller pieces)

Dump all ingredients into a bowl and have your favorite helper mix them for you. You can place them into a large ziploc bag or about 10-20 small portion bags for easy sharing while camping.

A nut free delicious trail mix for your kiddos on the go

-2 cups cereal (I used Kashi Heart to Heart but Cheerios would work great as well)

-12 oz yogurt covered pretzels

-1 cup roasted and salted sunflower seeds

-1 cup dried blueberries

-1 cup golden raisins

-4 oz chocolate covered sunflower seeds

Measure out your ingredients and mix in a large bowl. Place in a large freezer bag or individual portion bags for the kids to enjoy on the go.

What do you like to put in your trail mix? What do your kids like to eat while camping?

I’d love to hear from you 🙂
